The Words "Could," "Would," and "Should"

Welcome back to Read Not Guess. Today we’re going to work on the common words "could," "would," and "should."

Both parent and child will need to be able to see the screen.

Let’s get started.

Word Practice

Explain to your child that the word “could” rhymes with “good” or “wood.” It’s an important word for your kids to be able to read, so have them say the word “could” as they point to it three times:

Now have them read it in a few sentences:

Could you tell me the time?

Could we all go together?

I couldn’t do it.

“Could” also rhymes with “would,” so have them say the word “would” as they point to it:

Now have them try reading a few sentences:

I would like some ice.

Would you show me the cave?

Would you make me get a haircut?

These words also rhyme with “should,” so have them say the word “should” as they point to it:

Now have your child read a few sentences to practice:

I should ask Charley to make it.

Jane should wait by the road.

Sally shouldn’t try to catch that bumblebee.

If they read these smoothly, great! If they stumble, have them keep practicing.
