Daily(ish) Decodable: Words like "walk" and "talk"

The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.

Today we're going to work on the words “walk” and “talk.” These are important words, but they don't quite follow the normal phonetic rules.

You can review all of the prior lessons here

Rhyme It

Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

shock

run

walk

-------------------------------

Say It

Have your child point to and say the word "walk" three times (in American English, it sounds like "wok"):

walk

walk

walk

-------------------------------

Blend It

Have your child read these words out loud:

talk

chalk

chalky

talks

talker

talking

walks

walking

walker

Read It

(Remind your child that we worked on the “-ed” ending recently. If they need a refresher, start here.) Then have your child read the passage below out loud.

The Zoo

At the zoo today, I did not have fun.

We walked by the musk oxen. They let off a bad stink.

We talked to the three chimps. But they were resting and would not talk back to us.

I bumped my leg and then began to limp. My brother called me a wimp.

We walked to see the fish swim in the tank. But we could not see them. It was shut down for the day.

So then Mom said it was all over.

I started to sulk. And beg. And asked to come back another day.

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. What animals did they see at the zoo?

  2. Did the author have fun at the zoo? What makes you say that?
