Daily(ish) Decodable: Words like "rated" and "hated"

The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.

Today we're going to work on more Magic E words in the past tense. Remind your child that when they end in a “d” or “t,” they make the full “ed” sound.

You can review all of the prior lessons here

Read It

Have your child read the passage below out loud.

The “Rate It” Game

Yesterday, my buddy Jake wanted to rate everything. He made it into a game.

He gave a bad score to stuff he hated.

He gave a good score to stuff that he liked a lot.

For example, Jake rated chocolate cake from the diner as ten out of ten. A perfect score!

He noted that asparagus got a zero.

He rated the teacher's faded old boots as a two.

He graded my Mickey Mouse lunchbox a three. My new haircut got a seven.

Jake could rate almost anything.

His brother, Austin, gave this game five stars.

Me? I hated it.

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. Without looking back, can you spell the word "hated?"

  2. How would you rate today's story? Why?
