The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.
We've already worked on the hard “ea” sound in “eat.”
But today we're going to work on the soft “ea” sound in words like “head” and “dead.”
You can review all of the prior lessons here.
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
bed
sleep
head
-------------------------------
Say It
Have your child point to and say the word "head" three times:
head
head
head
-------------------------------
Blend It
Have your child read these words out loud:
ahead
bread
spread
thread
instead
ready
meadow
dead
undead
deadly
Read It
Have your child read the passage below out loud. (The word “bear” could be a little tricky, but have them try to sound it out first, and help them if they need it.)
Buddy the Bear
Buddy the bear lived in the woods.
He loved the quiet, but early one morning he heard the soft sound of drums from far away. Buddy followed the sound.
First, Buddy headed left. He saw a small ant wrestling with a leaf. He helped the ant, then went on listening for the drumming.
Next, Buddy turned right. He could hear the drums coming from a cave. He was not afraid, so he went in.
When he got into the cave, Buddy the Bear heard a family of skunks beating on drums. Buddy joined the skunks, and they kept playing the drums until it was time for lunch.
