The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.
Today we're going to work on words like “break” and “great” where the “ea” makes a hard “a” sound.
You can review all of the prior lessons here.
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
good
great
state
-------------------------------
Say It
Have your child point to and say the word "great" three times (it should rhyme with "state"):
great
great
great
-------------------------------
Blend It
Have your child read these words out loud:
greater
greatest
steak
break
outbreak
bear
wear
pear
tear
swear

Read It
Have your child read the passage below out loud:
P.T. Barnum
P.T. Barnum was a great showman who had many businesses. He ran a newspaper, he sold hot air balloon rides, and he had people pay to see animals, jugglers, and other weird things.
For example, he had the “Feejee Mermaid,” which was a human head with a body of a fish. But it was fake.
In fact, Barnum may or may not have said, "There's a sucker born every minute."
At age 60, Barnum started the “Barnum and Bailey" circus. It was a traveling circus that went from town to town by train.
One of the stars of the show was Jumbo, an African elephant that Barnum said was the biggest in the world.
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
Was P.T. Barnum known for telling the truth? How do you know from the story?
What is a "showman?"
