Daily(ish) Decodable: The word "been"

The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.

If you want to review any prior lessons, those are all freely available here

Today we're going to work on the word "been." It's a very common word, but it doesn't follow the normal spelling patterns.

Rhyme It Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

man men been ------------------------------- Say It Have your child point to and say the word "been" three times (it should rhyme with "men" or "pen"): been

been

been

------------------------------- Blend It Have your child read these sentences out loud:

How have you been?

I have been sleeping.

Has the dog been good?

Have you been here before?

Read It

In honor of Drive-Thru Day, have your child read the passage below out loud:

Drive-Thru Day

Have you ever been to a drive-thru restaurant?

Your drive your car up to a window to place your order.

You could order a hamburger or an ice cream shake. You have to speak loud and clear. Then, they repeat your order back to you to make sure it's all correct.

Last, you drive to another window to pay and pick up your food.

It's faster than having to park. But you don't get to go in and sit down.

Have you ever been to one before? Do you have a favorite one?

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. Can you explain how a drive-thru restaurant works?

  2. Why do the people working at drive-thru restaurants always repeat your order back to you?
