Daily(ish) Decodable: The Spaghetti Harvest

The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.

Today we're going to work on weird words that end in “i” but it makes an “ee” sound.

You can review all of the prior lessons here

Rhyme It

Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

Read It

Have your child read the passage below out loud:

The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest

Every year on April First the Swiss celebrate the Spaghetti Harvest. The wild spaghetti trees are ripe with long, tender, edible noodles.

The women pick the noodles off the trees and boil them in water.

The men butcher sheep and cows to make meatballs.

At dinner, they all gather around to tell their favorite pasta tales.

Wait…sorry, that's a joke. A long time ago, a TV show made up this story about the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest. It fooled some people, and they called to ask how they could grow their own spaghetti trees!

Did it get you? If so, April Fools!

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. What's going on in the story? Is there such a thing as a "spaghetti tree?"

  2. The story doesn't say, but why do you think people believe the Spaghetti Harvest story?
