Today we're going to work on the "sm-" blend in words like "small" or "smell."
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
small tiny call ------------------------------- Say It Have your child point to and blend the word "smell" three times: s m ell
sm ell
smell
------------------------------- Blend It Have your child read these words: smug
smack
smart
smush
smooth
smelly
smoke
smoking
transmit
dismiss
optimism
Read It
Have your child read the passage below.
Big or Small?
Are you big or are you small?
Well, that depends. A better question is: Bigger or smaller than what?
You might be bigger than a dog, but smaller than an elephant.
You might be bigger than a million flies, but smaller than one horse.
You might be bigger than your uncle, but smaller than your sister.
You might be bigger than a normal apple, but smaller than The Big Apple (also known as New York City).
You might be bigger than a pebble, but smaller than a mountain.
The point is, some questions depend on the context.
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
Without looking back at the story, can you spell the word “small?”
Can you explain what the word "context" means?
