Daily(ish) Decodable: The "ei" sound in "weird"

The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.

Today we're going to work on the “ei” sound in “weird.” Tell your child that “ei” can make several different sounds, but one of them is the long “ee" sound.

You can review all of the prior lessons here

Rhyme It

Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

beard

mustache

weird

-------------------------------

Say It

Have your child point to and say the word "weird" three times (the "ei" makes the "ee" sound here):

weird

weird

weird

-------------------------------

Blend It

Have your child read these words out loud:

weirder

weirdly

weirdest

Keith

either

neither

ceiling

deceit

protein

Read It

Have your child read the passage below out loud. There are a couple hard words today, so help them sound out any words they get stuck on:

Purple Day

Today is Purple Day. What is Purple Day?

It is a day to support people who have something called epilepsy. Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain.

Some people with epilepsy have seizures. A seizure can take many different forms, like a blank stare or body movements like jerking. If you see someone having a seizure, it may look weird to you at first, but it is perfectly okay. Find an adult who can help.

The good news is that epilepsy can be treated for most people. Put on a purple shirt today to show your support!

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. What day is it today?

  2. "Seizure" is a big word. What does it mean in this context? What would you do if you saw someone having a seizure?
