The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.
Today we're going to work on the “ea” sound in “eat” or “ear.” If your child needs a refresher on this sound, start here.
You can review all of the prior lessons here.
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
meat
street
cow
-------------------------------
Say It
Have your child point to and blend the word "meat" three times (it should rhyme with "eat" and "heat"):
m ea t
m eat
meat
-------------------------------
Blend It
Have your child read these words out loud:
heat
wheat
cheat
peanut
speak
hear
year
ear
earring
Read It
Have your child read the passage below out loud:
Face Your Fears
Today is Face Your Fears Day.
Are you afraid of anything? If so, what are you afraid of?
Me? I am afraid of snakes. I hate seeing them slither and slink.
Some boys are afraid of the dark.
Some girls are afraid of monsters.
Some dogs are afraid of storms.
Some men are afraid of small spaces.
Some women are afraid of talking in public, in front of a crowd.
Other common fears are flying, water, or blood.
If you are afraid, do not be afraid to speak up! We are all afraid of something.
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
What is the author of this story afraid of?
The author gives a lot of examples of common fears. Can you name a few of them?
