Daily(ish) Decodable: A Wren and a Worm

The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.

Today we're going to review the “wr” sound. If your child needs a refresher on the this sound, start here

Read It

Have your child read the passage below out loud:

The Wren and the Worm

A wren was walking in the woods when she saw a worm lying on the bare dirt.

"Hello, little worm," the wren said. "Why are you out here?"

The worm whispered, "Please don't eat me. I am lost."

“Oh. Do not be afraid. I will not hurt you,” the wren responded.

The wren wrapped up the worm in a wet leaf. She took him to a nearby stream. The worm was happy to be back in the mud.

"Thank you, Wren," says the worm. "You are wonderful!"

The wren smiled and said, "You are welcome, little worm. Stay safe!"

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. What happened in the story?

  2. At first, why was the wren afraid of the worm?
